Plymouth dealership reinstated
PLYMOUTH — Tim Martin's Buick GMC in Plymouth is back in business.
GM recently reinstated the dealership, which is located at 2303 N. Oak Road.
"They called me March 5 and said they would send me a letter of reinstatement," said an admittedly pleased Tim Martin, who also owns a Ford store in Bremen.
"We built this building (in Plymouth) in 2000 as a Buick, Pontiac, GMC store. It was built to house new vehicles.
"It helps to bring the new cars back in so we can sell and service and do warranty work and everything that comes along with selling new cars."
No word yet on whether other area GM dealers are being reinstated.
News reports have indicated that as many as 600 of the 1,100 dealers seeking reinstatement nationwide were given the option to remain with GM.
GM announced in November the cutting of 6,000 dealerships.
Mike Leep Sr., president of the Gurley-Leep Automotive Family, did not return a call. And Scott Tyler of Tyler Automotive in Niles declined comment.
Martin said he expects to get some new GM models in 30 to 45 days, and he's hoping to get at least 25 of them.
Martin said GM did not tell him why his dealership was reinstated.
His business sold its last GM vehicle in December.
Martin said he was not happy that the government got involved with GM.
"It was kind of a mess," he said. "And I tell you what, the last 18 months have been pretty hard."
But he added things are improving.
"Sales are picking up," Martin said. "Floor traffic and foot traffic has increased. You can tell there's more people in the market looking for new and used cars both."
It's a long ways from what it was four years ago, he added, but much better than two years ago.
"Compared to what it was 12 months ago," he added, "it has definitely picked up."
